Another typo! Should read "shortage of wood", not "weed", LOL!
-
>>per day only worked if you had a portable cooking surface. When that broke down, you had nothing. We only had wood/coal working stoves then. Winters were the hardest. The famine lasted 2 years, depending on an area.
-
There was not much to gather in the city. In the spring we could gather slippery elm seeds and some roots but after a while even the bark was stripped down. A piece of bread and water is all we had, flour required cooking and there was shortage of weed and coal as well, and an hour of electricity>>
-
There is a Chapati flat bread that just uses flour & water..its very flat and can be cooked on a griddle or flat stone in a fire.
-
Terror some Indigenous Nations/Native Americans made their flour with nuts they'd gathered..like pine nuts & ground them by hand on a grinding stone, they also collected seed heads of wild grasses or cat tail reeds. Did you have that during the starving years? Would they even have let you gather?
-
It should read "Do you know"...sorry for the typo :-/
-
Good to laugh about shortages when they're only temporary. I really enjoyed the witty posts. Q. Do you what Russians call an icebox? A. Siberia!
-
>>Flour was not a good idea either, we didn't even have oil to make the fry bread even if we had the recipe!
-
Mark, that video you posted reminds me of famine years I've lived through as a kid. Susan, our ration was a hunk of bread because it somehow felt more filling than rice>>>
-
rofl @ ma.k9 - made me laugh out loud :-D
