To my dear friends,
Of all the different outcomes I have rehearsed in my mind, this one, I never prepared for. I never imagined that once we were actually at the hospital in pro-op, ready to go, that someone would pull the plug, and the surgery would be cancelled. But it was.
After spending about an hour down in the surgery waiting area, I got called back to pre-op. Ron's nurse told me that the doctors were concerned about Ron's heart and wanted to have a stress test done before proceeding with the operation. His last stress test had been done 2 years ago and the anesthesiologist (especially) and the surgeon were concerned that with all his heart damage and with only collateral flow in his superior vena cava, the heart couldn't tolerate the the amount of stress it would undergo in the surgery. His cardiologist was contacted and would not release Ron for the surgery without doing the stress test first. We were told that even if Ron survives this surgery, which was very unlikely (yes, we were told that) he could very likely suffer a massive heart attack and die from that or end up spending the rest of his life in the hospital.
In trying to put the pieces together, I think that first of all the surgeon who was going to assist backed out. Dr. Lavor (the surgeon, not the assistant)has been consulting with renowned vascular surgeons all over the world and the concensus was, don't do it. Ron's too high risk. So with that, the anesthesiologist became very concerned and doubtful of the outcome. He spent about an hour explaining everything that was going to be done (in the surgery.) He painted a very grim picture. Ron's chances of surviving are very slim and it's almost a guarantee that in the least, he will be paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life. That being said and explained, he also understood that Ron's aneurysm is growing and he is literally a human time bomb. It could rupture at any time and he would die within minutes. It will rupture as it continues to grow, the question is when? How much time does he have if we do nothing? Basically, the anesthesiologist just wanted to know that we completely understood everything and that we both wanted to go ahead with the surgery.
So if he's paralyzed, we can cope with that. At least he will be alive. He doesn't have legs anyway, hasn't walked for years so it won't be such a huge change in that area. The problem is that he will have to have bags attached for elimination of waste. That too is acceptable. He'll be alive. He won't have any feeling so in some ways it can be a good thing. All the pain he experiences on a daily basis from his amputations will be gone. So, that is the best case scenario. I won't go into all the other "possibilities" because I don't have time to write a book. But I feel that the only option is to go ahead with the surgery and pray for the best.
So the stress test was done. It took three hours. We spent another 2 hours trying to get discharged from the hospital. Came home completely exhausted and depressed. Ron is still sleeping and we haven't had a chance to talk about everything. Of course it's all contingent on the results of the cardiac stress test. If it shows more damage to his heart since the last one two years ago, the surgery will be off. No options. We should know by tomorrow. If everything is approved and the cardiologist releases him for the surgery and if Ron still wants to have it, it will be some time this week most likely.
Please continue to pray. I know God has a plan in this somewhere. I just wish I knew what it was. I love you all and appreciate all the emails and messages of support and love that I received today. I will keep you posted. Love, Kathleen

O am so sorry to hear you got such an awful end to what had been going to be a great day. I'm thinking if the other surgeon was scared it is good he is gone, he obviously has no faith in himself, much less God's helping him. Ron needs not just "the best" but doctors sharing your faith in God.Suzi
