Halloween 11/1/10 9:48 PM

Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, is the night prior to November 1st or "All Hollows Day" also known as "All Saints Day". All Hollows Day originated in early BC as summer was officially ended, and the Celtic new year or "Samhain", began on October 31st. Samhain is honored as one of the most significant days of the Celtic calendar.

Halloween was later brought to America in the 1840's by primarily Irish immigrants. Besides bringing this Celtic ritual to America, they managed to add the ever-so-popular custom of 'trick-or-treating' to Halloween. Originating from the ninth-century European custom called "souling", Souling was originally an early Christ ian practice where individuals walked from village to village begging for 'soul cakes' or pieces of bread with currants. Then, on November 2nd, these soul cakes where given to individuals to tempt people to pray for recently departed family and friends to help them through their journey through 'limbo' to heaven.

All Hallows Eve has a rich and deep history with roots that stem from our shared common history. Celebrate this historic day with a new appreciation, and share your history with your family & friends.
