This Too Shall Pass 6/6/11 10:44 PM

by Kathleen Lockhart on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 7:39pm
Today the surgeon wanted to talk to me about some issues with Ron. Mainly, the ventilator. They want to get him off of it as soon as possible before he becomes any more reliant upon it. They may have to give him a tracheotomy just temporarily to help his breathing. Most likely they will try tomorrow if he is more alert and responsive. He also has developed a very large pressure sore on his lower back that could turn into a huge problem. It goes very deep and will have to be debribed on a regular basis. The reason he developed it is because there is no blood flow below Ron's abdomen. They knew it was insufficient before, but since the surgery he (the Dr.) said he now knows for certain that there is ZERO blood flow. This will most likely mean that Ron will have to have further amputation. What is left of his legs will die do to no blood getting to them. So even though they avoided paralysis, his stumps will be gone and he uses them so much for transferring, etc. But I know Ron and he will find a way to overcome that. Ron's still running a fever and last night a bacterial infection was found in his mouth. So he is on 2 antibiotics now. Still no more blood transfusions. His blood count is looking good, almost normal.
Overall, Ron had a fairly good day. He is getting very good at communicating his needs to me by nodding yes or no. He even joked with me at one point. Thank God he still has his sense of humor as that is what has always gotten him through in the past. When I was wetting his lips with a sponge I asked him if his lips hurt. He nodded yes. I then asked him if he wanted me to put some vaseline on his lips. He raised both of his eyebrows (Groucho Marx style) two times and grinned a silly grin through the tubes and all.I'm sure the nurses wondered what I was laughing about. Ron was laughing with his eyes.
Thanks everyone for all the love and support. I will continue to try to keep you all posted on Rons progress. I know he's going to make it. I know that "This too shall pass."

The fact that he is still joking is a very positive sign. Keep strong Kathleen. My prayers are still with you both.
